Martin Webb: A Mayor for All Sussex – Not Just Brighton.

As the race heats up to elect the first-ever Sussex Mayor, one criticism keeps surfacing — that frontrunner Martin Webb would only focus on Brighton. Webb says that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The Criticism.

Following the publication of an article about Webb’s campaign, online commenters didn’t hold back:

  • “Why should the rest of Sussex, you know that big area outside of the hole that is Brighton, bother to vote for you… Vote for you? Not a friggin chance.”

  • Totally Brighton centred, no benefits for foreigners in West Sussex like us in Worthing.”

  • “Does not seem to realise this is a Sussex Mayor. Seems totally Brighton centred. Last thing we need.”

  • “I’d have to be deaf dumb blind and stupid to vote Labour for anything. Your party hates its own people.”

For some, it’s not just geography — it’s politics. Detractors point to Webb’s Labour affiliation, with one commenter saying, “Having a Labour government and a Labour council is bad enough, and a Labour mayor…” Others dismiss the role entirely: “Waste of money, we don’t need or want a mayor of Sussex.”

The Response.

Webb is quick to challenge the “Brighton-only” label. Responding to one critic, he wrote:

“Hey Karey – just to reassure you, I don’t live in Brighton – I’m over in West Sussex. I’ll be announcing lots of ideas soon that will benefit all of the county.”

Far from being a one-city candidate, Webb has already been on the road — filming a promotional video in Arundel, speaking to residents across East and West Sussex, and promising county-wide initiatives.

A County-Wide Vision.

Webb’s platform focuses on:

  • Boosting transport and infrastructure across the entire county, not just the city.

  • Supporting rural communities and market towns.

  • Expanding economic opportunities for both coastal and inland Sussex.

Brighton may be the most famous name on the Sussex map, but Webb insists the mayoral role demands an all-county approach — and that’s exactly what he intends to deliver.

The Bottom Line.

Martin Webb isn’t running to be the Mayor of Brighton. He’s running to be the Mayor of Sussex. And whether you live in the city’s heart or the quietest corners of West Sussex, Webb says you’ll see the benefits of his leadership.

“I’m in this for everyone,” Webb says. “This is about Sussex — all of Sussex.”
